Pappacap, a Son of Gun Runner, Debuts Impressively at Gulfstream

May 14, 2021
HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Rustlewood Farm Inc.’s Pappacap graduated impressively in Gulfstream Park’s second race Saturday, leading throughout a five-furlong maiden special weight race for 2-year-olds to give freshman sire Gun Runner his second winning offspring.

Trained by Mark Casse, the homebred son of Gun Runner set fractions of 22.71 and 45.65 second for the first half-mile before drawing off to score by 2 ¾ lengths after completing the five-furlong dash in 58.40 seconds under Edwin Gonzalez.

The even-money favorite, who was foaled in Florida, had prepared for his promising debut with a series of five half-mile workouts, including a ‘bullet’ breeze from the starting gate April 23, at Palm Meadows, Gulfstream’s satellite training facility in Palm Beach County.

Pappacap demonstrated his sire’s affinity for the Gulfstream track. Gun Runner, the 2017 Horse of the Year, completed a sensational career with a 2 ½-length triumph in the $16 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) in 2018 at Gulfstream Park.
