4 Race-Day Fashion Tips For Dressing To The Nines

May 02, 2018

The Pegasus World Cup Invitational—or in other words, the richest horse race in the world—took over Gulfstream Park earlier this year. (Seriously, the richest. Horse owners paid up to $1 million to participate and the race’s purse equaled a cool $16 million, with $7 million of that going to the race winner. Not to mention the other seven races with $1,025,000 at stake that day.) Hearts pounded, crowds cheered, and jockeys and their thoroughbreds vied to be champion. But there was also another kind of excitement abuzz that day, and that’s what the spectators were wearing. After all, when you’re witnessing 12 of the fastest horses in the game competing with so much on the line, the least you can do is put on your Sunday Saturday best. Plus, visitors rubbed elbows with socialites and celebrities the likes of Ludacris, Wilmer Valderrama and Pharrell Williams. (They’re just like us and go to the races!) That adrenaline continued during the recent Florida Derby, where fans sashayed and showed off their swagger in the Walking Ring during the Divas & Dudes Hat Contest.

We’re betting these race-day fashion trends will help you fit right in. Miami calls for looks that read a little beachy, a little sexy, and a lot of chic—think Hermes belts, colorful jackets, and sizzling sleeveless dresses and rompers. Don’t forget to check out the boutiques at Gulfstream Park before the next fashionable race—they have what it takes to help you look like a million bucks.

1. MAKE A STATEMENT: Now is your chance to go all out with a headdress to impress. Elegant wide-brim sun hats might reign supreme in sunny South Florida, but a sculptural fascinator that's also a work of art will help you stand out among the fashionistas.

2. KEEP IT CLASSY: Even though the dress code has loosened up with the times (and not to mention Florida is, well, hot), you still want to remain respectful. So think elegant and watch your hemlines. You can even opt for shorts, but go for glam with a metallic pair and gussy them up with wedges or heels. And, if you’re donning a hat, you’ll want to shy away from anything that would take away from your headdress.

3. SHARP DRESSED MAN: Fashion isn’t only fun for the ladies—guys can also express their inner runway model. In Miami, you’ll find the usual dapper suits, bowties, pocket squares and vibrant socks, but funky button-downs, colorful jackets and cool shades also strut their stuff near the track.

4. CLUTCHES ARE CLUTCH: Obviously the most important purse on race day is the monetary one at stake, but a stylish clutch comes in as a close second. After all, you’ll need somewhere to keep your cell phone and keys. But to be truly race-day ready, don’t forget to primp, and bring along your lipstick, perfume and blotting sheets to stay refreshed throughout the day. Opt for a straw clutch with colorful pom poms that gives a nod to the beachy locale, or go the more sophisticated route with a neutral purse that can be used as a clutch, shoulder or cross-body bag.
